Tap, slap, thump — meet the cajón! This wooden box drum comes to us from Peru, and it's played by sitting behind it and striking the front with bare hands. Made entirely of wood with a sound close to a snare drum, it's a proper instrument scaled for a young musician, delicately illustrated by artist Sarah Betz-Cubeely.
What makes a cajón so satisfying is that the whole surface responds differently. Strike near the centre for a deep, round thump, closer to the edge for a sharper crack — your child's hands become the whole drum kit. What is a cajón drum?
It's a wooden box drum originating in Peru, traditionally played by sitting on top and striking the front face with your hands. It's now a staple of flamenco and acoustic music worldwide, valued for producing a surprisingly full range of tones — from deep bass to sharp snare-like snaps — from a single wooden box.
How is a cajón different from a regular toy drum?
Most toy drums make one sound however you hit them. A cajón responds to where and how it's struck, so a child can discover deep tones, sharp cracks, and everything between just by moving their hands. That variety keeps it interesting far longer and teaches real listening along the way.
