Description
The whole scene in five little figures! Mary bowed in blue and red, Joseph in soft purple, the baby tucked into his wooden cradle, and a donkey and ox resting quietly alongside — a complete nativity scaled from 2cm to 6.5cm, small enough for little hands to carry about and arrange.
The painting is what makes these so lovely to look at. Colours are brushed on in soft, layered washes that let the wood grain show right through, and the faces are barely there — just enough to suggest a bowed head or a closed eye. That gentleness leaves plenty of room for your child to bring their own feeling to the story.
And because it's wood rather than china, this is a nativity that gets played with. Set it somewhere reachable and the figures will be moved, retold, and rearranged all through December.
Why we love the Ostheimer Holy Family Nativity Set:
- Five Figures, Complete Scene: Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus in his cradle, a donkey, and an ox — everything the story needs.
- Softly Hand-Painted Wood: Layered colour washes that let the grain show through, with gentle, understated faces.
- Sized for Small Hands: Pieces from 2cm to 6.5cm, solid enough to be picked up, carried, and set down again daily.
- Just Right from Age 3: Chunky wooden forms with no small fiddly parts to lose.
How do children play with a nativity set?
Usually by retelling the story their own way. Children move the figures around, give them voices, add animals or figures from other sets, and happily rearrange the whole scene several times a day. Leaving it somewhere reachable rather than up high is what turns it from a decoration into part of their play.
Can we add to the nativity over time?
Many families do, building the scene up across several Christmases — starting with the Holy Family and adding shepherds, sheep, or kings in later years. It makes a lovely tradition, with each piece carrying the memory of the year it arrived.
Five little figures, one quiet scene, and a story told again each December.
