Smooth, rounded wooden pebbles in warm fire tones, sized just right for little hands to scoop up, sort through, and stack. Two on top of each other is a triumph at first, and before long there's a wobbly tower and a very proud face behind it.
Then the tower comes down and the pebbles become something else entirely. Rocks along a river made from a play silk, a cave for tiny animals, a rocky landscape for small figures to scramble over, or a cairn built one stone at a time.
