Description
Thirty-six wooden coins in three shades of blue, ready to be counted out, traded, and stacked! Coins are the loose part that easily turns into money, so a shop, a market stall, a bakery, or a bus fare can appear out of nowhere.
They're just as good lying flat. Flat discs are the natural base layer of a mandala, the pieces you build the outer rings from before adding cones and peaks on top. Or they become stepping stones, lily pads on a play-silk pond, raindrops, or the pebbles at the bottom of a river.
Each piece is hand-dyed rather than painted, so the blues soak into the wood with the grain showing through. Three tones means light, mid, and deep blue, ready to be sorted, sequenced, and layered.
Why we love the Grapat Wood Mandala Blue Coins:
- Three Shades to Sort: Thirty-six coins across light, mid, and deep blue, ideal for gradients and ordered patterns.
- Instant Pretend Money: Coins become shop play, market stalls, and counting games without anyone suggesting it.
- A Flat Base for Mandalas: Discs lie flat, making them the natural foundation layer beneath cones, peaks, and spheres.
- Hand-Dyed Wood, Age 3+: Water-based dyes that sink into the grain, so the colour stays true through years of play.
How do mandala coins support early maths?
Almost entirely through play. Children sort them by shade, count them out into groups, trade them in shop games, and build repeating sequences — all of which are counting, grouping, and pattern skills. Because nobody sets a task, children work at whatever level they're ready for.
Is Grapat worth it?
Worth weighing up properly. Grapat pieces are hand-dyed in a small Spanish workshop using non-toxic water-based dyes, so they cost more than machine-produced sets. What you're paying for is a toy with no fixed purpose and no wear-out point — coins that are stacking pieces at three, shop money at five, and mandala material long after.
Thirty-six blue coins, and a shop about to open!

About the Brand
Grapat is a family-founded brand that emerged from the simple yet profound realization that children thrive on open-ended play. Established in the serene countryside after the founders observed their own children's imaginative play, Grapat has dedicated itself to creating wooden toys that encourage creativity, freedom, and interaction with the natural world. Their philosophy is deeply rooted in respect for childhood, believing in the power of simple, unstructured play to foster development and imagination.
Handcrafting each piece with care and attention to detail, Grapat uses sustainable materials sourced within the EU, emphasizing eco-friendliness and safety. The toys are brought to life with natural dyes and finished with vegetable-based waxes and oils, highlighting the wood's inherent beauty and ensuring each item is unique and safe for children. This commitment to quality and sustainability reflects Grapat's values of environmental stewardship and the promotion of a slower, more intentional way of life.
At the heart of Grapat's ethos is the belief that toys should serve as tools for play, not dictate it. By offering materials without instructions or imposed limitations, they invite children to create their own stories and games, nurturing their innate ability to innovate. Grapat stands as a testament to the belief that through play, children can explore the world, understand their place within it, and express their individuality freely and creatively. -
